Public Estate: De Tempel
‘De Tempel’ is an estate that is situated in Rotterdam, in walking distance from the old town of ‘Oud-Overschie’. A very green and wooded area among the many fields. A nice feature are the various statues that can be found in the garden, among which are twenty monuments.
The estate has its early beginnings in the 15th century, where the first buildings where placed. The main house is the latest addition, added in 1937 in neoclassicist style, a design by Rotterdam architect H. Sutterland.
Since the fifties, the estate belongs to the Rotterdam municipality. For a period it was rented out to ‘Delta Psychiatrisch Centrum’, as a temporary housing and care center. Delta also helped in maintaining the gardens at the estate through rehabilitation of people recovering from addiction.
Currently the city of Rotterdam is renovating the estate. In the meantime it is freely accessible to all, for admiring the art and architecture and a nice afternoon stroll.
