Introducing the Tour D’Amour directors
On Sunday May 14th, the second edition of Tour d’Amour will take place. You will go on a creative journey on various locations in Rotterdam Noord. Introducing the directors that will take you with them!
FILM – by Nina Spiering
In this workshop we will explore the basics of film. We will look at the way stories come to life and how to make a story into a film. We will do this by looking at examples, but most of all, we will try ourselves, by making our own short film. In this one and a half hour workshop you will learn how to bring to life a screenplay. We will finish be watching the resulting short film.
For this workshop you will need a phone with a camera and enough free space to film something.
Since 2008 Nina Spiering works as a director, producer and production designer on short fiction films, documentaries and interdisciplinair projects. Almost all of her work starts with the fascination for a place. For the last few year she has focused on making many small portraits, that combined are able to tell the story of a place. Besides being a filmmaker, Nina Spiering is also a teacher at the HKU. She teaches Concept & Production at the School of Media.
SPOKEN WORD – by M.
The Rotterdammer M. sees and translates the beauty of the contemporary into poetry. Speaking about a round of newspapers like it’s a craft or the look in someone’s eyes, as if we have all been able to see like that before. M. doesn’t act. He’s looking for the genuine. His poetry is authentic. A recitation by M. isn’t an act, it’s human emotion straight from the heart. Nothing is over the top. Human to human, and from a critical perspective, M. reminds his listeners that the world doesn’t revolve around the individual. Unity is our natural state. His heroes are the warriors from his own surroundings. From dancers that are able to stop time with a single movement to poets that can use their words to claim silence. And to the little boy from his neighbourhood of course, with or without papers to deliver.
M. is a spoken word-artist from the southside of Rotterdam and is a rising star in the world of poetry. His biggest inspiration, what else could it be, is the city of Rotterdam. In this workshop he will introduce the participants to some of his and others spoken word poetry in order to get the inspiration flowing. They will then take pen to paper and try to catch the spirit of the city in word themselves.
FOOD – by Speck, Celine Maessen
Speck is from the makers of restaurant Tosca, who felt that there were some improvements to be made when it came to different kinds of take-away food. That’s why they came up with a brand-new concept. The key principles of Speck are fresh, healthy and affordable. In her kitchen, owner Céline combines Italian cooking with Israelian cuisine. In her stone oven she makes the best pizza and oven dishes.
DANCE – by Cuarita Azul
For more than twenty years now, the creative and well-known TangoClub Cuartito Azul in Rotterdam has been organizing a wide range of tango activities. A central location for dance and music, meeting new people and discovery.
The Latin Tango is an elegant dance with a wide range of expression. In Cuartito Azul we avoid fixation on closed sequences that only lead to endless repetition and the practice of stiff postures following old-fashioned rules. We teach and stimulate enjoyment of dance with a clear structure and movement technique, with pleasure and satisfaction, enabling you to create your own style, dynamics, musicality and sensuality.
The vibe at Cuartito Azul is relaxed and the approach is personal. You can participate in classes, inspiring workshops and fun practice evenings and tango parties. The Tango group belonging to Codarts has a special connection to Cuartito Azul and regularly performs during those parties. Come stop by at our lovely building in ZoHo (close to the Bogen), learn how to dance the heartwarming tango and get moving!
MUSIC – by MAASK
In this workshop we’ll swiftly take you through the basics of beatboxing. Creating some cool beats, strange soundeffects and fat basses with your own human voice. After we’ve learned the basics, we’re going to record our vocal beats with a ‘loopstation’. A device that allows you to rapidly record a piece of sound and play it back immediately, in a loop. We’re going to loop our own voices, and layer them in order to build our own, completely original piece of music.
Maask (Joost Maaskant) is the ultimate beatbox/loopstation act of the Netherlands. In his solo performance he uses his own voice and a customized 8 track loopstation to create full finished dance and hiphop productions in a split second. He takes you on a journey from Noisia inspired bass to Major Lazeristic dancehall, to Whitney Houston ballads and back to Jazzy Ska. With his clownesque stand-up skills he tries to disrupt his audience by fooling around with the clichés and customs of the pop and dance scene.
In the past two years Maask played over fourhundred shows at almost every Dutch festival as well as abroad, in Germany, Belgium, Poland and Scotland.
FASHION – DAISY KROON
Daisy Kroon graduated eight years ago from the Willem de Kooning Academy and started her own label named Daisy Kroon. Her work is an invitation to simple wonder: a relaxed sense of mystery that is reflected in the casual, but intricate designs and the comfortable textiles she works with. The collections are highly wearable, contemporary and are recognizable by its use of bright colors and an explicit line in coupe and color. Her designs usually have a slightly male and minimal cut with a Scandinavian allure.
Since 2014 she has her own store: a light and spacious studio located on the corner of the Brancoplein in the North of Rotterdam with big windows and a high ceiling. Previously she used to work in half-yearly collections, now there will be a series of garments that she wants to have in her closet year-round.
This workshops offers participants the unique opportunity to work with different fabrics and material in the designers studio. Daisy Kroon will introduce them to the technique of ‘moulage’. Where a design is usually first put onto paper, with ‘moulage’ you drape and mould fabrics around a mannequin in order to come to a new creation. The goal is to experiment and be creative, and who knows, you might end up with a beautiful new design.

PHOTOGRAPHY/ILLUSTRATION – ANNE BOTMER and BIBI KOK brought to us by YEDS
Anne Bothmer and Bibi Kok both study photography and illustration at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. They are both imagemakers as well as thinkers, and love a good laugh. Although neither of them are originally from the city of Rotterdam, the two of them enjoy the genuineness and raw character of the city and everything else it has to offer to them. For Tour d’Amour they were inspired by the famous motto ‘Sterker door strijd’ (which means: stronger through combat) for Tour d’Amour 2017 and created an interactive installation named Roffa is de bom!
With this interactive installation we visualise Rotterdam’s motto ‘stronger through combat’ by using pictures from the city archives from the time of the reconstruction as a backdrop in our studio. For Tour d’Amour we plan to build a set on the stage at Broeinest, where the visitors can immerse themselves. The result is a realistic black and white picture with contemporary visitors, situated in historical Rotterdam. The title of the installation, that incoporates street language, results from the Rotterdam sense of humor, that can be rough around the edges. With our idea we want to showcase our city pride and empasize her rough character.
All pictures will be combined online at the Roffa is de Bom website and the Tour D’Amour Facebook page. On top of that, visitors will receive a card with information about us and what we do. The card is a ‘greetings from Rotterdam’ parody. From Roffa, with love!
Want to join us? Tickets for Tour D’Amour can be purchased online and cost 7 euro’s.
