Lost in Rotterdam: Part 2
LOST IN ROTTERDAM: PART 2
Freelance copywriters Vincent van Bruchem and Jasper van den Blink take turns in sending each other to unknown locations in Rotterdam. Challenges, orders or directions: all communication will take place using WhatsApp. Read their story below and get lost in Rotterdam together!
This time it’s Jasper’s turn to send Vincent to a location – destination: Schoonoord park. A hidden park – to most Rotterdammers – situated on Kievietslaan in Het Scheepvaartkwartier. Nothing wrong with a stroll around the park, you’d think… if it weren’t freezing outside.
Vincent: Yo, yo, yo! I have arrived!
Jasper: Very good. Do you know where you are?
Vincent: Yeah man. Coincidentally, I was here last year. I like it! It was quite different, though. It was during summer… Brrr!!!
Jasper: Even though you’ve been there before, I prepared a little introduction. Do you want to hear it?
Vincent: I’d love to!
Jasper: Ok. You’re in Schoonoord Park. Also known as Rotterdams secret garden. I love to come here, to enjoy the uhh… beautiful flora and fauna, but I prefer to visit it in the summer. Just like you. My question to you: how is the situation in the winter, the fauna in particular?
Jasper: In other words, are all the animals still alive? To answer this question is your assignment for today.
Vincent: I can hear the birds singing.
Jasper: That’s a good start. What’s the wind chill factor, by the way?
Vincent: -14 give or take. My hands are already starting to turn blue…
Jasper: That’s unfortunate. But, just imagine how the animals must be feeling right now. I’ve done some research online and there are a lot of different animals in the park.
Vincent: I don’t see any of them yet…
Jasper: As it happens, I’ve just found a map of the park on Google, which I’m looking at right now. So I can navigate you through the park from behind my computer, from home. Isn’t that nice?
Vincent: Oh, I just got to the aviary.
Jasper: Nice, then I know where you are.
Jasper: Are they still alive?
Vincent: For sure! No worries.
Jasper: You’re being a bit of a drama queen about the cold then, it seems.
Jasper: What kind of bird is that? I can’t find it on the map.
Vincent: A yellow headed buzzard.
Jasper: Wow, I’m impressed. By the way, you should be able to spot a tawny owl. Flying free in the wild, though.
Jasper: Okay, are you done with the buzzard?
Vincent: Yeah, I’m done.
Jasper: Then, I’d like an update on the frog fountain, please. You’ll have to walk back a bit according to the map.
Vincent: This one?
Jasper: Uhm, I don’t know. That could also be the Japanese koi pond.
Jasper: Anyways, no koi carp or frogs? Dead or alive?
Jasper: Fuck, then I don’t know where you are. Lost in Rotterdam from now on then.
Vincent: I’m at the Ginkgo Biloba. Also known as. the ginkgo tree or the maidenhair tree.
Jasper: Oh right, with WiFi you’re never truly lost.
Vincent: Hey, an animal!
Jasper: The owl!?
Jasper: Oh a duck…
Jasper: According to the map, the frog fountain should be somewhere to your left.
Jasper: Let the duck go. We’re looking for frogs and owls. And koi carp.
Vincent: How about this one?
Jasper: Yes! That can’t be anything other than a frog fountain.
Jasper: King frog on his throne. Any other frogs around?
Jasper: Shit. There should be a pond to your right. Is there?
Vincent: That’s where I saw the duck.
Jasper: Oh. No koi carp?
Vincent: Let me check.
Vincent: Not a trace of fish.
Jasper: Fuck. No fish, no frogs. Maybe the duck ate all the frogs.
Vincent: It’s snowing!
Jasper: How are you doing in the cold? How happy do you feel, accurate to two decimal places?
Vincent: It’s really cold. But it’s beautiful here. Nice and peaceful, right in the middle of town. I could use a mulled wine or something…
Jasper: I see you can still use your finger to send text messages. So it can’t be that bad.
Jasper: Wow, that’s where you are?
Jasper: In that case you’re close to completing your last assignment: finding the beehives.
Jasper: In between the American sweetgum and the Catalpa tree, to the left of where you are, according to the map.
Jasper: Yaaay. Are they there? Are they still alive?
Vincent: I don’t hear any buzzing
Jasper: Lift one of those lids.
Vincent: Empty and deserted
Jasper: Shit. So, where are they?
Vincent: Sleeping, I guess
Jasper: Wait, let me google that.
Vincent: My answers are getting shorter, because my hands are starting to freeze. 🙁
Jasper: They are there, but they’re having their winter sleep according to Yahoo answers. Should we leave them alone in that case?
Vincent: Yes, or do you have another assignment?
Jasper: Yes, the tawny owl!
Jasper: The park keeper?
Vincent: The park guy managed to tell me that there’s no way I’ll see the bees around. Only at 12 or 13 degrees celsius.
Jasper: So, no frogs, no koi carp… but sleeping bees nonetheless.
Vincent: And a duck. And of course, that buzzard.
Jasper: Right. So, even in winter the park is pretty doable.
Vincent: Yes, almost as much fun as during summer 🙂
Jasper: A successful trip, if I may say so.
Vincent: I’d say so! I do feel like having a hot chocolate now, though… Where should I go to have one?
Jasper: Uhm… I think they should serve it at the restaurant at the Euromast park, a park close to this one. Feel like visiting another park?
Jasper: Maybe the owl is over there…
Vincent: I’ll take a look around…
Jasper: Good luck!
