Diversité – From shoe connoisseurs, to shoe creators
What could be a better way to show off your city pride than to wear a pair of shoes inspired by one of Rotterdam’s most famous landmarks: the Erasmus Bridge?
Wesley dos Santos and Adilson Araujo are childhood friends that have always shared a passion for fashion and shopping, and most importantly: a good pair of shoes. A little over three years ago they decided to combine their passion with their business knowledge and started their own business.
It took them one year of saving and research, but after all, their hard work paid off when ‘Diversité’ was born with the creation of their first shoe model. They created the design together, after researching and experimenting with different city landmarks. The Kubus houses, among others, didn’t end up making the cut and instead they landed on the Erasmus Bridge. Wesley crosses the bridge almost daily, “It’s a beautiful feeling to be up there, it makes you fully realize how amazing this city is. It almost gives you goosebumps.” When Wesley and Adilson settled on a design they sent it off to a technical designer who translated into a print that could be taken into production, and presto. From shoe lovers, to entrepreneurs. It can really be that simple.
And that’s exactly the kind of message they want to send out into the world: take the chances that you’re given and use them to the fullest. Their handmade shoes are specifically targeted towards ‘go getters’, the people that know what they want and aren’t afraid to go for it. Owner Wesley dos Santos thinks Rotterdam is full of these type of people. “We don’t think too much about fitting into a certain category, we just do. Like other Rotterdammers.” It’s also a way of giving back to the city that shaped them, where both of them were born and raised. Their main office and showroom is located in the area that they both grew up in.
Wesley and Adilson are already planning ahead and thinking about their new collection. In tune with the vibe of the city, it will feature prints from different cultures that can be found in Rotterdam.
