Festival season 2016
This summer was my first year as a festival photographer in Rotterdam and it was a bloody good one! From culinary festivals to techno festivals, everything has passed my camera and I want to show you some of the pictures that really stood out for me this season.
Modular Festival was a muddy one and rather quickly changed to ‘mud-ular’. But damn, this was a great start of the festival season! With big international headliners, festival people from many different walks of life and great techno and house beats. But looking back [..] the muddy grounds, dirty shoes and yellow raincoats still circulate my mind.
This picture was the very first ‘wow’ picture of the season for me. Absolutely enjoying the music to the max without any second thoughts about the rain, wind or mud. This is how it should be, enjoying the music, the artists and each other.
After weeks of pouring rain and almost hazardous windstorms we finally had a festival ahead with Rotterdam pride Broederliefde taking the stage. This rapidly growing hip-hop formation took over at Triangle Festival and had everybody shifting from left to right.
This is probably my favourite picture of the entire festival season! The new festival generation is born.
Rotterdam Rave is a household name in Rotterdam. It’s one of the must see parties if you are into techno music with the biggest international techno DJ’s showing up at the indoor events in the Maassilo. The outdoor festival couldn’t become any less than an absolute success and it was!
The festival even became more interesting for me when I heard the ‘Mayor of the Night’ – the most famous poet from Rotterdam – Jules Deelder would show up and share some of his favourite Jazz music with everyone. What a hero and legend he is!
Between all that big festival bombarding there were also some lighter events like the culinary festival CuliNESSE which took place at the beach of Nesselande. This event was more focussed towards families and had some singer-songwriter music and bands.
CuliNESSE was particularly interesting for me because of the band Kensington, my all-time favourite band absolutely nailed it at the beach and made my festival season complete!
