The Wasted City by Ossip Zadkine (1890-1967)
The plaques says: “‘The Wasted City’ / Ossip Zadkine 1890-1967 / Offered in 1953 to Rotterdam, just like us struck in the heart during the war 1940-1945 / De Bijenkorf”.
This is the statue.
Another shot of the statue.
The plaque, which you can see on Plein 1940, says: “1940 / 14 May 1940 bombing or Rotterdam / at 1.27PM within a quarter of an hour the historical city went to waste / 850 dead / 2.000 wounded / 258 hectares downtown in ruins / 25.000 homes destroyed / 80.000 people homeless / 11.000 other buildings destroyed”.
The eternal fire is blazing. This city survived a war and is still alive, long enough to tell the tale that made this historical city stumble a bit.
Rotterdam, she still stays strong. Look at her. (Rotterdam’s flag waving us to a formidable future).
