Introducing Robin & Lieke: our new interns
A couple of weeks ago, two great new interns joined the Rotterdam, I Love You team! They have already shown to be both great people to work with, and ardent lovers of Rotterdam. In their own words:
“Hey everyone! I’m Lieke, 22 years old and born and raised in Rotterdam. I’m studying Cultural Studies. During my whole childhood sports and especially hockey were my biggest passion. This always contained lots of training besides the weekly match day. After high school I decided to be ready for some new challenges and I took a gap year. I went to Cambridge to improve my English and after that I became a ski teacher for one season. That year was really amazing but when I was back in Rotterdam it really felt like home again so I decided to stay!
I started my bachelor on Erasmus University and started working at De Doelen. This was my first real contact with the cultural sector. Nowadays I’m in the third year of my bachelor. I started to think about possible ways to connect my love for Rotterdam and my study. In Rotterdam, I Love You, I found the perfect combination. Rotterdam functions as inspiration and driving force for this project.
I feel really involved in the team of Rotterdam, I Love You and I already get real responsibilities. My tasks concerns lots of brainstorming, keeping up with social media, writing marketing formats and joining network receptions. Sometimes I can attend important presentations and I’m part of different cultural events as well. As a member of the Rotterdam, I Love You team I’m constantly on the move and there is not day the same as the day before. This makes the internship really dynamic. As much as I want to stimulate myself to widen my horizon, I want to stay in Rotterdam because I can see and feel the beauty of this city where others may consider it ugly. Where others like to stamp the city as raw or real I think the beauty of this city is that it’s just not definable, to experience what the definition ‘real’ means, you must just visit the city. For me Rotterdam is beautiful in all its ugliness…”
“My name is Robin and for the next period of time I’m working as an intern for Rotterdam, I Love You. After studying Cultural Studies at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam for almost three years now, it is finally time to wrap up my bachelor with an internship. Within my study I mainly focused on management, marketing, economics and media in the cultural sector. After learning a lot about the cultural sector I am glad that I can finally find out what it is really like.
At Rotterdam, I Love You I work as an assistant to the producers and marketing assistant, fulfilling tasks like maintaining contacts, assisting the production, helping with social media, doing administrative tasks and helping with special projects. I will be supporting the whole project and set my first steps in the cultural working environment.
My experience here will hopefully lead to a career path in the cultural environment of the Netherlands. I am finding out also via this internship where my strengths lie on which I will try to base my direction for the future.
While I am not born and raised in Rotterdam, but in Dordrecht, I still love the city. I like that it feels like a ‘city of the world’, for its size but also because of all the different cultures living in it. In my youth I have visited Rotterdam mostly just for fun, museums, movies, food and shops. But because of my educational background and thus increased amount of visits to the city, I started to not only love some of the facilities but the city as a whole. Every day I learn new spots and routes, I would totally see myself living here as well in the future. Rotterdam has a certain rawness in it which gives opportunities for everyone.”
