Three brass bands: SLR, CEB and Dreamteam Brass Band at the streets of Rotterdam, a Golden Drum and over 50,000 spectators – that's the Battle of Drums. Explorer and amateur photographer Alex Bussenius was there at Hofplein to enjoy the show, during this year's Zomercarnaval.
Summer Carnival Street Parade was back this year! The procession of 2,5 km attract dancers from different cultures and nationalities and has only one mission: make everybode dance! Participants are dressed in beautiful and colourfull costumes. Explorer Alex photographed this largest Caribbean street party in the Netherlands.
If you happen to pass by Round&Round, there’s no chance you won’t notice it. Its window is drawn on with a white marker and the big, beautiful mural painting they have inside is visible from the outside. And so our explorer Athena went in.
When you are in Rotterdam, you cannot miss the 'Paradise Church'. Behind the often open gates, the white presence on the Nieuwe Binnenweg has a friendly appearance. The angel above the entrance welcomes visitors with a 'peace be with you.'
Rotterdammer Shariff Nasr first of eleven directors for international feature film Rotterdam, I Love You
After an intensive selection process in which thirty Rotterdam filmmakers participated, Shariff Nasr is selected to be the director of a special story, which connects the ten other stories and thus forms the backbone of the film. The names of the ten other Dutch and international directors will be announced in the coming months.
Our explorer Alex Bussenius visited the Stairs at the Groothandelsgebouw. The temporary eye-catcher was an idea by MVDRV architects and a nod to 75 years of rebuilding the city, which is celebrated with the cultural event Rotterdam celebrate the city (Rotterdam viert de stad!). On top of the Groothandelsgebouw he witnessed a wedding.
